Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford was first interested in acting at the age of teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not suitable for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth application. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
